01The living city
Old Aix, markets and fountains
Begin where daily life and historic form overlap.
Start at Place Richelme in the morning, then allow lanes and small squares to interrupt the route toward Cours Mirabeau. The fountains are not separate trophies; they mark the city’s relationship with water and public space.
On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday the larger markets change the density of the centre. Arrive early, and avoid turning an entire morning into a single crowded circuit.

02Art and architecture
Mazarin, Granet and Cézanne
Choose one deep cultural visit rather than three hurried ones.
The Mazarin quarter offers a calmer urban composition south of Cours Mirabeau. Musée Granet is the natural major museum anchor, while Cézanne’s studio and related sites require current booking and access checks.
Cézanne matters most when the city and landscape are connected: the studio, the streets he knew and the changing structure of Sainte-Victoire. Use the official Cézanne information to understand which sites are open during your visit.

03Beyond the façades
Meet Sainte-Victoire deliberately
The mountain is not a background prop.
A viewpoint, a walk near Le Tholonet or a guided hike can each be valid. Match the plan to fitness, transport, weather and seasonal fire-risk restrictions.
If time is short, preserve a city day and see the mountain from a well-chosen eastern approach. A rushed drive to a trailhead adds less than a coherent second day.

What should I not miss in Aix-en-Provence?
Old Aix and its morning market, the Mazarin quarter, one meaningful art or Cézanne visit and the relationship with Sainte-Victoire form the strongest first-time overview.
How many days do I need in Aix?
Two full days give the city room: one for the centre and art, another for Cézanne, Sainte-Victoire or a slower neighbourhood rhythm. One day can still be excellent if tightly clustered.
Is Aix-en-Provence walkable?
The historic centre, Cours Mirabeau and Mazarin are highly walkable. TGV arrivals, countryside hotels and many Sainte-Victoire approaches require separate transport planning.
